After 40 years in education, Paul Gruber, retired in June 2023 and moved from NJ to Denver, Colorado, to be near his grandchildren.  As a Mathematics instructor, he always had a love for teaching and has had a special bond with his students. In the past, Mr. Gruber has taught every level class ranging from sixth grade math through Advanced Placement Calculus-BC.  As an AP Calculus teacher, he began the program in Elizabeth HS with eleven students and grew the program to have 170 urban students taking the exam, with 70% passing and 45% getting fives.  While a teacher in NYC, he had a passing rate of 95% on the regents in a school where the average passing rate was about 20%.  In addition, Mr. Gruber has authored articles and has written a test prep workbook.  Mr. Gruber has also worked as an administrator in developing Math curriculum. 

 

In addition to teaching, for the past ten years, Mr. Gruber has done staff development by leading APSIs (AP Summer Institutes), for the College Board, in both AP Calculus & AP PreCalculus, throughout the country (NYC, Las Vegas, Pittsburgh, Morgantown, Tuscaloosa, West Palm Beach, Charleston, Tucson, Phoenix, Union County-NJ, etc).  While doing his workshops, he constantly inculcates much of what he knows on Brain-Based Learning as well as the philosophy of  “Building Thinking Classrooms”.  Mr. Gruber has graded the AP Calculus exams since 2013;  This past year, he was honored by being a Question Leader in the newly formed AP PreCalculus exam.   Over his career, Mr. Gruber has also done workshops on teaching Mathematics for Cuissenaire as well as other book companies on the use of a variety of manipulatives – a hands on approach in learning Math.  As for Denver Academy of Torah, Mr. Gruber plans to reach out to parents and organize a few Math Nights to share much of his knowledge.   
 

 Mr. Gruber attained his Bachelor’s degree from Baruch College, Masters from City College of NY, Administrative license from Kean University and he was going for his doctorate from Columbia University, but unfortunately, never completed it (W.O.D. – without dissertation).  

 

Mr. Gruber grew up in Flushing, NY where he attended Yeshiva Central Queens and belonged to the Young Israel of Hillcrest.   For the past forty years, he lived in the Hillside/Elizabeth, NJ community with his three sons where all went to the JEC and is looking forward to being part of the Denver community.
